---

Since October 2009, the Hampton Roads area has experienced six commercial burglaries, six stolen autos and one destruction to property related to thefts or attempted thefts of ATM machines. Currently two of the burglaries and three of the auto thefts have occurred in Newport News. The remainder of the cases occurred in Hampton, York County, James City County and Chesapeake. With the exception of the Bottom Dollar burglaries, each burglary involves the suspects using a van to smash through the store front and then attack the ATM machine. The two burglaries in Newport News occurred at the Bottom Dollar in the first block of Elmhurst Street on December 30, 2009 and again on January 15, 2010. The three auto thefts in Newport News occurred in the 900 block of Lucas Creek Road (Toddler Station) overnight December 29 and 30, 2009, in the 1400 block of Kiln Creek Parkway (Bright Heights Learning Center) overnight February 25 and 26, 2010 and in the 1200 block of Shields Road (private residence) in the early morning on March 27, 2010. Newport News detectives believe that the van stolen on Lucas Creek Road was used in the first Bottom Dollar burglary, that the van stolen on Kiln Creek Parkway was used in an ATM burglary in James City County and that the van stolen on Shields Road was used in an ATM burglary in York County.

Newport News detectives believe that similar burglaries and auto thefts in Hampton, York County, James City County and Chesapeake are related to those being investigated in Newport News and are working with investigators in those jurisdictions. Questions regarding the cases being investigated by the other jurisdictions should be directed to those agencies.
